| Links: | WELCOME to the Greenhouse webpage. The facility, completed in May, 2002, is located on the south side of the Conrades-Wetherell Science Center. The structure houses OWU's botanical collection, as well as, student and faculty research projects . Ohio Wesleyan has a strong botanical history. The first greenhouse structure was built in the 1890s during Dr. Albert Mann's tenure. That structure was a glass lean-to connected to Merrick Science Hall. The second greenhouse built was named in honor of the late Professor Claude O'Neal. The O'Neal Greenhouse, was erected in 1962, as a part of the construction of the Bigelow-Rice Hall.. Many opportunities exist for students to participate in current research. Through class and independent studies students have conducted competition, mineral nutrition and propagation projects in the greenhouse. The Summer Science Program, (StAP) Student Apprenticeship and legacy internship programs allow one-on-one student and faculty/staff interaction. Projects that have been completed include collection research and database support, building permanent display areas and creating mini-ecosystems within our tropical and desert rooms, and garlic mustard study in conjunction with the OWU Kraus Nature Preserve. In addition to its use for botany laboratory classes and independent research, the greenhouse has been a site regularly visited by classes of local school children. It has offered various artists inspiration for their compositions and has even provided plants featured in OWU drama performances. The greenhouse serves our students, faculty and staff. |
