Jann M. Ichida is a Research Professor in the Botany/Microbiology Department. As an environmental health scientist, she is involved in courses and instruction in water quality, microbial ecology, biology of t he fungi and applied bacteriology. She is also the Biosafety and Chemical Hygiene Officer for the science departments, supervising safety programs in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations with the Dean for Academic Affairs.

Mrs. Ichida has been a co-author for research and equipment grants from the National Science Foundation totaling over $1.8 million to OWU for the purchase of the Scanning Electron Microscope and investigating feather-degrading bacteria. She works on composting poultry waste using Bacillus licheniformis, a bacterium isolated from wild songbirds, has two U.S. Patents and several publications.

Mrs. Ichida lends her expertise to The Five Colleges of Ohio's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) "Roundtable." The Five Colleges of Ohio consortium (Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, and Wooster) organized their EHS managers into a team known as the "EHS Roundtable." She works closely with an employee of The Five Colleges, Kristine Pohlman, who is headquartered at Ohio Wesleyan, on implementation of a $50,000 grant awarded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Ohio Environmental Education Fund. Mrs. Ichida was chosen by the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) to be a 2005 Fellow, and was honored at the AWIS annual reception on February 20, 2005 in Washington D.C. Fellows are chosen on the basis of their significant contributions to the promotion of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through scholarship, leadership, education, mentoring, advocacy, or service.

Mrs. Ichida has been at OWU since 1962. She has a passion for wild mushrooms and magical connections with plants, and enjoys leading students on mycology forays into the OWU nature preserves. She travels, camps and relaxes with family during holidays.
